My Windows box at work began slowing down tremendously a couple months ago. After bashing my head against the wall awhile, I found the problem was my c:\windows\temp\ directory was filled to overflowing with Acr*.tmp files: AcrA015.tmp, AcrE30D.tmp, et cetera, until the hard drive was full. Emptying the temp directory solved part of the problem — my machine worked fine again. Unfortunately, something was writing hundreds of these small files every day. Apparently this was not a new issue. Adobe Acrobat Reader Freezes Acr*.tmp (http://www NULL.feeds4all NULL.com/Item NULL.aspx?ItemID=12150528)

In the end, I found this post (http://www NULL.adobeforums NULL.com/cgi-bin/webx?14 null@null null@null NULL.3bc0bde4/33) on AdobeForums.com (http://www NULL.adobeforums NULL.com/):

I found the file to be renamed at C:\program files\adobe\acrobat 7.0\reader\AcroRdIf.dll . Hopefully you can find it there. I renamed the file and haven’t seen the acr.tmp problem for weeks since I did the rename to AcroRdIf.dll.old
John F Ervin

That did it: I renamed C:\program files\adobe\acrobat 7.0\reader\AcroRdIf.dll to C:\program files\adobe\acrobat 7.0\reader\AcroRdIf.dll.old and thus far, no more .tmp files.
